artist statement

As an artist, I am inspired by the human condition, with particular focus on the unique role that struggle plays in each of our lives. Do we choose to succumb to our struggles, cope with them, or attempt to overcome?

Although I often present “darker” imagery, my work is actually very optimistic in nature. I attempt to show humans in a positive light: each of us has the capacity to create good no matter how troubled we may be. Struggle, though it may manifest differently in each of our lives, is a shared experience that connects us all.

I come from a long line of artists and makers, but never developed an interest in visual arts until I was in high school. Battling depression, art became an escape and a critical outlet for expression, one that continues to help me combat my mental and emotional struggles.

I explore the theme of humanity’s struggles through a variety of mediums, but my heart resonates with the timeless and ethereal medium of cyanotype, often using photographic captures of my site-specific performances, or other subject matter that is simultaneously reminiscent of the natural world and eerily otherworldly. It is my hope that my work will remind us all that there are so many more things that make us the same than make us different.
